SolSource Grill – The Solar Powered Grill

Here’s another pretty cool KickStarter project that’s also “environmentally friendly”; the SolSource grill, completely powered by the sun.  The SolSource grill requires no gas, electricity, or any fossil fuel; saving you money and helping the environment.

SolSource was developed with the nomads in the Himalaya’s over 5 years.   After many prototypes, the final version of SolSource was born, shown here.

The SolSource grill works like any normal grill, except you need the sun; in the video below, they do say they used it in overcast conditions and it worked.  It can be used as a BBQ, to cook food, and even boil water.  Just point the reflectors in the direction of the sun and the reflectors reflect the sun’s energy onto the burner.  The burner gets as hot as a normal stove, while the reflectors stay cool, making it safe to use around kids and pets.  Another benefit of this grill is that it doesn’t get affected by wind, which can be a major pain in the butt when you’re BBQing with charcoal.

For a pledge of $249, you can get yourself one of these environmentally friendly grills.  I think the SolSource is a pretty good idea, the price is a bit high though, and I just wish people would stop using the words “carbon footprint”!!!

  1. I plan to get one.

I calculated that I could save $7/year by using a solsource grill over a microwave to heat water for tea/coffee.

closer to $20/year if I cooked meals on it – so it would take a while to pay for itself.

but there’s always the health benefits – no charcoal on your food, and maybe less BPH than food cooked in plastic in a microwave.
