Purity First Trailer – Deus Ex: Human Revolution

Augmented eyes in Deus Ex: Human Revolution - Purity First Trailer

Eidos just released a new live action trailer for their “Purity First” faction of the game. These are the group of people who oppose the use of augmentations in healthy humans, and are lashing out against the major augmentation manufacturers to stop producing them. Sarif Industries is obviously the primary target, and in the video, it seems they’re the victim of some computer mischief. Perhaps the Anonymous crew is still around in 2027 stickin’ it to the man.

I usually find these kind of trailers a bit hokey, but this Purity First trailer is actually quite interesting if you can stomach the terrible mix of live action footage and low-budget Command & Conquer quality CG. We get a chance to see why everyone was rioting in the first few trailers, and I think this goes a long way to show the deep and compelling storytelling that Mary DeMarle injected into Human Revolution. I find even the Canadian Television grade CG effects tolerable with such an interesting story as the backdrop.

When you consider how rapidly mechanical augmentations are improving in our very real world of 2011, I wouldn’t be surprised if some of the very issues that we see in the trailer become reality for us. There’s already a double-amputee Olympic sprinter whose artificial legs allow him to out run his non-disabled peers, and we can’t forget the work of inventor Dean Kamen; his work on a new mind controlled prosthetic mechanical arm for the Department of Defense is nothing short of astonishing. The question is whether people will embrace these technologies, or fight back like the people of Purity First.

Deus Ex: Human Revolution arrives August 22nd for PC, Xbox360, and PS3.
