NatureMill Ultra Composter – For The Urban Gardener

I’ve wanted to compost our food scrap for several years now and technically I do thanks the bins provided by the city. But I want to do it at my place and actually use the compost for the urban-garden we have in our tiny backyard. When it comes down to it, we’ve been too lazy to actually do it. My friends compost at their place and use a rubber bin. We were thinking about something similar but I have across NatureMill and their line of auto-composters which look pretty promising.

It’s pretty cool how NatureMill’s largest unit, the Ultra composter, can turn food scraps/waste into black gold in only two weeks. With the NatureMill Ultra composter, you simply toss food waste (including meat/fish), coffee grounds, and even tea bags into the upper chamber. The device will slowly mix, heat, and aerate the contents.

As the NatureMill Ultra composter does its thing, the material will drop down into the lower chamber. Once the tray in the lower chamber is full, simply empty the tray and spread over your lawn, garden, and indoor plants much like you would with mulch. It’s pretty simple and quite fast.

The device only uses about $0.50 of electricity per month according to NatureMill. One thing about indoor composting is that there is an unpleasant smell but of course they have a solution for that. There is an air pump which draws in air and blows it out via a power air filter. The device also comes with baking soda which would help not only with any odors but also with the acidity of the compost.

There are three different models offered by NatureMill ranging in price between $249 and $399. The NatureMill Ultra composter has a 4 gallon (15L) weekly capacity and is the quietest of the units at 47db. At 47db, still a good idea to keep it out doors or in the basement away from the TV or areas of entertainment.

If you want to compost but don’t want to do it the manual method (rubber bins), you might want to consider the NatureMill Ultra composter or one of their smaller units. For more information, check out their website.

  1. It’s a bit on the expensive side, but this actually looks pretty damn awesome. I could use this for the veggie garden we’re putting together, as well as our house plants.
