Naki’o, The World’s First Mechanically Augmented Dog

There’s something heart-warming about a dog with mechanically augmented prosthetic legs. Maybe it’s the dogs silly doe-like walk, or that it has a new lease on life, but whatever the reason, videos like this make me proud that we have humans working hard on problems just like these. Today it’s a dog with new robotic legs, and perhaps tomorrow it will be a double amputee human with new mechanized limbs. The possibilities are endless, and in Naki’o’s case, he got the best possible result from a very shitty start on life.

You see, Naki’o’s mechanical legs are the result of the failing American economy, and a family’s cowardice in dealing with their own problems – namely, a litter of dogs. Naki’o’s owners fled and left him and the rest of his litter alone in the basement of their foreclosed home. Naki’o, being a stupid puppy, stepped into an icy puddle, froze his furry legs to the floor, and the rest is history. Leaving dogs in a basement without heat or food is obviously the most effective way to make sure they live a long and healthy life.
