Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain – 30 Minutes of Gameplay Footage

I’ve written about Metal Gear Solid V a few times now over the past year, and that’s interesting because I’ve never played a MSG game before. In fact, what little I saw of other people playing, I kind of hated. Like… a lot.

Strangely, though, I find myself excited about The Phantom Pain… maybe even a little aroused. It’s definitely not the wacky Japanese element to the game, but perhaps it’s the open world, or maybe just the lack of spy-craft in my life. Honestly, what man doesn’t fantasize about being a master Bourne-esque spy? That dream is a daily occurrence of mine…

But whatever the reason, I think The Phantom Pain is looking pretty great, and no where have I seen a more obvious mark of its greatness than this 30 minute gameplay demo put on by, well… I honestly have no idea, but do yourself a favor and watch it anyway. You’ll hear a bit of babbling at first, but the presenters will dive right into the presentation shortly after.

Sure, parts of this game look crazy (more like crazy hot, am I rite?!?!), but the sense of scale and – most importantly – agency, have me well and truly impressed. It’s obvious that you can approach these bases any way you like, and not just in the all-too-common “there are three different ways to attack this scenario” kind of way. No, it looks like you can really do whatever the heck you want, and that makes me very happy indeed.

My only concern is that we’ll never see a PC version, despite Hideo Kojima stating that he would love to see. I like to see a lot of things, but that rarely makes them so. Just the same, and as I always say… a man can dream.

Right now Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain is scheduled for release later this year on PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Xbox 360. If it makes any difference to you, as noted in the video you just watched, the game will run at 60fps and 1080p on the Playstation 4.
