Inflatable Geodesic Cave Tent by Heimplanet

I don’t have too much experience with camping and it’s kind of a love/hate relationship. The idea of it is really cool but actually doing it is not all that great. I think my problem is the fact that I don’t have access to hot, running water. And I really love my hot showers. If most camp grounds offered that, I’m game. Oh and I don’t like being the person that has to pitch the tent. Errr, let me re-phrase that. I don’t like being the person that has to setup the tent as it can get pretty annoying.

But thanks to two German engineers, I no longer have to fear tents. The Cave tent is developed by Stefan Clauss and Stefan Schulze Diekhoff of Hamburg. The Cave tent takes only one minute to erect and is based on two central concepts. The tent does not use any poles for the structure but instead – an inflatable skeleton. And secondly, it uses a geodesic shape for the structure. The structure inflates from a small 20”x12” package into a 54 square-ft shelter in less than 60 seconds.

To make the inflation of the tent a seamless task, the whole process is one continuous operation. The inflated beams which take the weight of the structure are made up of five separate sections so even if one or two sections fail to inflate, the structure will still be functional.

The tent weighs in at 11.5 pounds and has a hefty price tag of $669. For more details, check out Heimplanet.

  1. Would worry about high winds, needs a blow-up floor mat undeneath and a canopy over the tubes for warmth. |Will colder days need extra inflation to maintain rigidity? Repairable? Leaks could spell trouble – one spark form a campfire could cause collapse, where as the traditional sticks with tension do not. Keep trying – no cigar!

  2. I’m with Uncle B, that and some of the places I camp have some pretty nasty sharp stones and cacti. Website says the “struts” are reparable or replacable and guy wires are needed for some conditions, but will it stay up in those conditions?
Like the vestabule in the pics on the site, good thinking.
    No mention of fire resistance.
