What makes a person interesting? When you meet certain people and walk away thinking “Well, that person is quite a character!” What is it that makes that so?
Interesting people have lots to talk about. They have a lot of life experience and can tell a good story as a result. This makes people want to be around them. Another factor is that these people invariably have a hobby that they are very passionate about.
Everybody should have a hobby that enriches their lives. It doesn’t have to be so you can feel like a more interesting person, but you will get a lot of benefits out of having a hobby besides just that.
The type of hobby itself doesn’t even matter. It could be that you’re a firearms enthusiast that loves to go to the Indoor Shooting Range, or maybe you are a passionate cook that enjoys learning about different cuisines from around the world.
Whatever it is, it can have you become a more rounded individual and should be pursued.
In this article, I will go over the benefits you get out of having a hobby you are passionate about.
They give you an outlet
Some hobbies are creative like painting or being a dj or musician and those provide a way to express your personality. Others are more physical like a type of sport or activity that allows you an outlet to let off some steam.
Whatever your hobby, it gives you time and space away from everything that can be demanding of your attention. This allows you to focus on yourself that can help you focus and recharge the batteries.
When all you have is work and TV, then you can end up finding yourself not only uninspired, but you can even get depressed. A hobby can break up the monotony and help you feel like a whole person. Without one, life is pretty grey.
Creates a community
Being around like minded people that share your passion and enthusiasm is really important for a person. It can help you feel like you belong to something and it always feels good to know you aren’t alone in your passion for a particular hobby.
It’s almost like having a second family for some people. Having a connection to others is important in many aspects of life. But, when you share a hobby, it’s a great feeling to know that there are others who feel the way that you do and appreciate the same things as you.
If you like to travel then you can often find people that share the hobby in the place where you end up. And with it a community of people that could prove to be friends that last a long time even though they live far away. Moving to a new city is often very daunting when you don’t know people there, but if you have a hobby, now you can socialize right away and makes the move much easier to handle.
Certain hobbies can help you develop skills and understand certain concepts that you aren’t exposed to in other areas of your life. You might have a menial job, but when you practice your hobby, it allows you to work on these skills to keep them sharp if you aren’t using them otherwise.
Then, you can often work your way up in a job because of the skills learned. You could be more organized as a result, understand certain technical aspects better or simply just have more motivation to learn new things in general.
Even gaining confidence is part of the equation with these new skills you have developed and this helps you grow as a person. People love to be around confident people, so not only will your social circle grow from the people that also share your hobby, but also from others in your orbit that are not part of the other group.
You’ll age slower
There have been studies done that show that senior citizens are less prone to dementia when they have an activity that keeps them busy, social and their mind engaged.
The most effective types of hobbies that slow the effects of aging are creative ones, of course. Painting, sculpture, drawing or even quilting is a great way to keep the mind sharp. And other hobbies that involve groups keep them social which is also very important in slowing the aging of the brain.
