About a year ago, I wrote a post on the hidden electric outlet safe – it was a great idea for keeping small valuable items from being stolen in case of a break-in but you couldn’t really put anything bigger than a watch in it. Now there is another option, the Hidden Air Vent Safe.
The safe looks like a normal air vent that hides a secret compartment where you can hide larger valuables. All you need to do is make an opening in your drywall (14.5” W x 8.25” T x 3.75” D), put in the secret compartment shelves, and install the front metal louvers. To open the “safe”, just turn the screws ¼ turn and the vent assembly opens up like a draw bridge revealing your hidden treasures.
I think the hidden air vent safe is a pretty good idea but unlike electric outlets, there are not that many vents in the house and some thieves might just go have a peek to see what’s behind the vents, if they have time (pretty unlikely though but it’s still a possibility). I think if this package came with a small safe that has a combination lock behind the vent; it would be a lot more secure. But even without the safe, I still think it’s a pretty good idea although a bit on the expensive side, priced at $259.15 + $15 for shipping. A safe like this can easily be made with parts available at a hardware store and a little time spent on designing it.
