FlyNano – Single Seat Electric Seaplane

The idea of flight has been around for a very, very long time but successful flight was only achieved about 110 years ago. In the last century, man has made some pretty sweet ass aircraft and in recent years, small private companies have attempted to develop aircraft that use electric motors rather than fuel.

The FlyNano is a uniquely designed seaplane that I came across recently. The aircraft is developed by a Finnish aeronautical engineer, Aki Suokas, and made its debut in 2011 as a concept aircraft. The appeal of the FlyNano is that it is the lightest single-person aircraft on the market, flying the aircraft without a pilot’s license, and a sticker price of under $34,000.

Prototype of FlyNano

With the current configuration, the electric engine will help the FlyNano seaplane achieve a top speed of just over 80mph while reaching an altitude of 9,800 feet. The FlyNano prototype has a flying range of 43 miles. The final design of the FlyNano will be ready next year and the first 35 planes will be delivered by the end of 2013. Check out the video below of the first flight. And if you’re wondering where the luggage goes in the airplane – it stays at home!
