This behind the scenes video for Deus Ex: Human Revolution is a bit different than most of the videos that Eidos releases. You won’t find swaths of new gameplay footage, or mountains of new information, but you will get a small glimpse into the methods that Alexandre Dessoint – the head of playtesting/research at Eidos Montreal – used to make sure that Human Revolution wouldn’t be a steaming pile of garbage like Invisible War was. What impressed me most was that Alexandre stressed the point that he wasn’t simply wanting to hear good things about the game; he wanted to hear people’s honest opinion of the game, even if he didn’t like the answers.
Behind the Scenes Play-testing of Deus Ex: Human Revolution
Years ago I had the opportunity to playtest a World War 2 era first person shooter, and the developers would actually get angry when we didn’t play the game “properly”, and I thought this was rather stupid. Play-testing is one of those funny things that’s incredibly important to the success of a video game, but an area that’s all too often overlooked by the developers. If developers not only had gamers play-test their games, but actually listened to the occasional bit of feedback, perhaps games like Deus Ex: Invisible War would never see the light of day.
Deus Ex: Human Revolution hits store shelves August 23rd for PC, Xbox360, and PS3.
