Sometimes, those final days of summer just drag on and on. If you’re stuck inside all day because it is too hot to do anything outside, it doesn’t take long for the boredom to sink in.
You have already binged on all the shows on Netflix that you wanted to see. You’ve watched all the way through The Office for the 16th time. When Ferris Bueller called, you told him you’re dying, but he says you’re not- you just can’t think of anything good to do.
And you know what? Ferris is right.
It’s time to try some new things to get you out of your boredom rut. If you can’t think of anything good to do, don’t worry, I have some ideas for you.
Here are 7 effective strategies to beat boredom:
- Build a Fort and Stream a Movie
If you’ve been stuck at home all day and are going crazy, building a fort will make you feel like you’re in a whole new place.
Gather up all of the pillows and sheets in your home, and get crafting. Fill the fort with your favorite blankets, snacks, and drinks. Build it around your TV if possible. If not, make sure to bring a laptop, tablet, or phone.
Redbox has a feature that will allow you to rent movies on demand and watch them immediately on any device. So you can rent the new releases without ever having to leave home. And it only costs a couple bucks!
Between building your fort, finding your movie, and watching it. You’ve easily filled 2 to 2 and a half hours (unless you rented The Hobbit, then you have filled about 4 hours).
- Try Yoga
Sometimes, a little exercise is all you need to burn off the extra energy that has you bouncing off the walls. Try some easy at-home workouts like yoga to get you moving.
Yoga is especially fun if you and a friend try it together for the first time. You can laugh at each other for how miserably you’re failing at imitating the instructor.
The Yoga Collective is a great place to find yoga classes for all experience levels, and they offer a free 15-day trial. You can play a video or two for free and just have fun with it!
- Learn a New Craft
This one is a little bit tricky because you’ll probably need some equipment and materials. Hopefully, someone in your family is already crafty and you can just mooch off of them. If you have the resources, try to learn a new craft like knitting, crocheting, sewing, or baking.
Bluprint offers many fun online courses and free patterns. You can sort by the craft you want to learn, experience level, and the cost of the item. The courses usually cost money, but if you already have some experience with your craft, you can just pick out a free pattern.
You can use these warm summer months to knit yourself a hat and scarf so you’re ready when winter rolls around.
- Online Casino Games
Looking for a little more risk and adventure? Try online casino games! In these games, you play with real cash and have the chance to win big.
There are many options from which to choose, so it can be difficult to get started. OnlineCasinoGems is a great resource to find the best games and casinos available. Also, if you want to hone your skills, they offer many great tips and tricks to help you play better.
You can play a game of chance, like slots, or a game of skill, like poker. There is a whole world of online gaming to discover, so take a look around at your options.
- Read a Comic Book
If you’re a big fan of the Marvel movies, but you have never taken the time to actually read the comics, now is the time, my friend.
Hoopla is an app that allows you to “borrow” comic books to read digitally. There are many familiar titles as well as some less popular ones.
It’s free to use, so download a couple of comics and see what you like best. You may just discover that you’ve been a comic book nerd in waiting this whole time.
- Guided Meditation
Meditation is a great way to get yourself out of the boredom spiral and into a restful mindset. It’s a healthy way to hit reset on your day and is a great practice to add to your daily routine.
Mindful is a great resource for all things meditation. You can read up on the benefits of meditating or you can dive right in with some guided audio meditation. The guided meditation sessions will help you feel more calm and balanced so you can conquer the rest of your day.
This is great for those Sunday afternoon blues. It’ll get you on track and ready to face the new week.
- Try Out a New Recipe
If you have a car or easy access to a grocery store, try out some new recipes that you wouldn’t normally make.
Pinterest has an overwhelming number of recipes. You can find something for any meal and any diet. You can look for new healthy meals to put in your rotation or you could find guilt-inducing, cheesy, bready, deliciousness. It’s completely up to you.
Put together a small grocery list and go buy everything you need to make your new recipe. You can cook just for yourself or you can invite a friend over to be your taste-tester.
Once you get in that boredom rut, it can be hard to get yourself out of it. Maybe nothing on this list sounds good, but just start doing one of them anyway. Chances are, you’ll feel better just because you’re finally doing something. Hopefully, you’ll end up having fun while trying something new.
