Zombie 101: Everything You Need to Know

It’s incredible to see how zombies have become such an important part of our popular culture. People can’t get enough of TV shows, movies and books that feature the living dead. Shows like The Walking Dead continue to catch an unprecedented number of devote fans; and there are a number of cult movie classics like Night of the Living Dead, White Zombie, Idle Hands and many others.

But have you ever wondered where the concept behind a zombie comes from? Well, it all originates from West African Voodoo culture. A Voodoo priest could supposedly reanimate the dead and have them do their bidding. Slaves brought these beliefs and tales with them to Haiti and the rest of the new world.
The first time the word zombie was ever seen in print was in 1838 in a short story called, The Unknown Painter. And the first zombie film, White Zombie was later released in 1932. From there, the craze for the undead never died. Get the pun?

Other zombie facts:

George Romero is considered the father of the modern zombie. He has created so many zombie movies that have led to today’s representation of the zombie monster.

There are three main ways that the zombie virus is spread:

  • One: Contraction from a virus, which quickly decimates the population
  • Two: Exposure to radiation (for example, the Resident Evil games/films)
  • Three: The dead are reanimated using Voodoo magic
