WANDERERS – Home In Other Parts Of The Solar System?

Since the beginning of mankind, people of all cultures and religions have gazed into the night sky to contemplate life’s greatest questions – Why are we here? Where did we come from? And where are we going? The night sky resource has essentially shaped the world’s cultures, the current knowledge of sciences, religions, philosophies, and our general conception of the universe. WANDERERS is a beautiful and inspiring short science fiction film by Erik Wernquist of Stockholm, Sweden.

The film is a vision of humanity’s future expansion into the solar system. Although theoretical, the visuals in the WANDERERS are based on scientific concepts and ideas of what mankind’s future in space might look like, should it ever occur. All of the places which are depicted in the film are digital recreations of actual places in our solar system. To make it as “realistic” as possible, the team even used real photos and map data where possible.

WANDERERS Short Film

Wernquist had published a detailed explanation of this short film which can be found at Imgur which reveals where the inspiration and imagery for each scene comes from. I would highly recommend checking that out to get a better understanding and learning something new.

Wernquist also used an audio clip of Carl Sagan reading his 1994 book, Pale Blue Dot, and layered it over this short film which just happens to work wonderfully here. Other inspirations for the film comes from science fiction authors such as Arthur C. Clarke, Kim Stanley Robinson, and space artist Chesley Bonestell.

The next 100 years of space exploration should be interesting but I doubt I will live to see the colonization of any nearby space real estate.
