THIEF – ‘Channeling the Primal’ VGX Trailer + Five Minutes of Gameplay Footage!

Robes… robes are always a bad sign.

And when it comes to lengthy development cycles, the same usually holds true. Thief has been in development for a long, long time, and over the years I’ve heard some bad things. Maybe there’s some truth to them, or maybe they’re nothing more than rumors, but whatever the case I’m not looking to dwell on the negative; in fact, quite the opposite.

Channeling the Primal

I’m going to assume that all of you have at least heard of the Thief series before. Originally created by Looking Glass Studios and starring Stephen Russell as Garrett the master thief, THIEF – as the game is now known – is being rebooted by Eidos Montreal. The voice actor is also new, and I’ll talk about that more a little later.

In the mean time, I’ve got a brand new story trailer for your enjoyment called “Channeling the Primal”. For what it’s worth, this is one of my favorite trailers in the last 6 months. I hope you enjoy it!

What did you think?

The reason I enjoyed it so much was, simply put, the voice acting. Romano Orzari, the new voice of Garrett, was a heck of a lot better than I expected. In fact, if this little story trailer is any indication, then I would say that he’s just as good as Stephen Russel. There, I said it.

Actual Gameplay Footage, Oh My!

We haven’t seen a lot of gameplay footage over the years, but that all changes right here, right now. If you’ve got 5 minutes to kill, then check this out. Just be aware that the entire thing is in German, so if you don’t sprechen Deutsch, you’ll just have to look at the pretty pictures.

I want to hear your feedback in the comments below, but this is what I liked…

  • First person animations and physicality look amazing. Hand and foot movements, Garrett’s entire body showing, etc.
  • The world looks stylized in a beautiful way. It shares the tone of the original Thief games, but with much improved graphics.
  • The thieving and movement mechanics actually look like a lot of fun. This is the type of stuff that just wasn’t possible when Thief 1 & 2 came out.

What do you think about the game so far? I want to hear your thoughts.

Sometimes a new developer can breath new life into a series, and other times… well… other times the situation can turn out very differently. I don’t think there’s any replacing Looking Glass, but hey, Deus Ex: Human Revolution turned out pretty well for a reboot.
