The Evolutionary 2016 Jaguar XF Sedan

Apparently there’s an all-new Jaguar XF sedan out, it was introduced a few days ago. Why didn’t we right about it? I saw it but thought it was just the same car with the numbers “2016” in front of its name, because it looked so much like the first generation car.

At first, this post was going to mock the new 2016 Jaguar XF sedan, but when I saw the pictures closely, I do see a new-er car. I guess Jaguar is employing the Audi design philosophy, where the cars look the same from generation to generation, but when you look closely, you do see a bit of a difference.

I’m not going to let Jag off the hook that easily, I still think this is a pretty lazy effort at a “new” car, and I haven’t been a big fan of Audi using this technique. But at least the XF is a lot sexier than any sedan Audi has for sale here, in this class. The XF was a very fresh take on a mid-size luxury sedan when it was first introduced in 2007, but that design has aged now and I complained about their new small sedan, the XE, looking too much like the XF.

From the exterior, the first thing I noticed was the new third window behind the rear door, which was the thing that made me realize there was something different about the 2016 XF. The other differences are the narrower front lights, which are now LED, and new taillights that the look of the F-Type’s taillights with their LED inserts. Other than that, the 2016 XF looks very much like the old XF and the XE.

The new XF is 0.3” shorter overall and 0.1” lower than the car it replaces, but has a 2” longer wheelbase. The car is also lighter, the RWD models lose 132 pounds and the AWD lose 265 pounds compared to the 2015 car. 75% of the car’s body panels are made out of aluminum, contributing to the weight loss.

The interior is also very evolutionary, with a minimalist look. It doesn’t look particularly good based on the pictures provided but I’ll hold judgment until I see it in person. The car is equipped with an 8” or optional 10.2” touchscreen, and a new 12.3” TFT display replacing the analog gauges, similar to the XJ and Range Rover.

Initially the 2016 Jaguar XF will be offered with the 3.0 liter supercharged V6 engine that produces 340 horsepower and 332 pound-feet of torque in the base model and 380 HP and 332 lb-ft of torque on the S trim. Both engines will come with the 8-speed ZF automatic transmissions. We’re pretty sure Jaguar will offer the V8, R, and R-S models at a later date.

The 2016 Jaguar XF sports sedan will be officially unveiled at the 2015 New York Auto Show.
