Sikorsky X2 Helicopter – The Fastest Helicopter On Earth

The Sikorsky X2 is now the worlds fastest helicopter, reaching cruise speeds of 259mph. The X2 beat the Westland Lynx’s 1986 world record of 249mph by a modest 10mph. The speed increase may not be substantial, but the team expects to reach a top speed of 288mph by the end of the year, which is far and beyond the speed of most conventional helicopters.

The X2 is considered a proof of concept and is aimed at improving helicopters for both military and civilian purposes. The military applications are immediately obvious, but in terms of civilian use, helicopters capable of reaching these speeds would aid in the transport of injured persons, and time sensitive items such as organs.

Personally, I think it would be pretty fun to dash around the city in one of these things. Maybe paint it black, add a pin-up girl to the front, or a painting of my own smiling face… perfect.
