Sight – Deus Ex Meets Black Mirror

Sometimes the most interesting, unique film projects come from students or small teams of people. They’re able to flex their creative muscles like big studios can’t, and technology is making this less and less expensive. Sight, a short futuristic film by Eran May-raz and Daniel Lazo is most definitely creative.

If you’ve ever played Deus Ex, you’ll probably understand why I’m making the comparison. Adam Jenson, the protagonist of the game, has augmented eyes that are very similar to what we see in Sight. I mean, minus the whole wing-man app… Adam probably kept that one on the down low. As for Black Mirror, an amazing mini-series by my hero, Charlie Brooker, well… in that, they share a very similar dystopian future vibe.

Creepyness Sighted

I don’t know if anyone else noticed, but man was this guy ever creepy. He reminded me of some anime nerd who just happened to be well dressed for a change, and even more miraculously, scored a date with a decent looking woman. His behavior was creepy to the max, and I expected him to do something strange, but what I was not expecting was the whole rape angle. It’s tough to say whether he simply made her forget the last few minutes of their exchange, or if he flat out controlled her. Either way, I’m guessing that the end result was probably the same; yikes.

As we progress from hand held cell phones, to head mounted displays, and eventually computer systems either implanted into our eyes, or our brains, I have a feeling we’ll have to deal with many of the issues that Eran and Daniel brought up in this film. If we’re so easily able to pick up on people’s feelings and emotions, will that help or hinder our social interactions? If we’re constantly bombarded with information, will that distract us from “reality” even further? With the pace at which cell phones and portable devices are evolving, we’ll have to figure these things out sooner rather than later.
