RME Audio has a great new interface on the market for recording audio on the go or on your desktop. I recently had the opportunity to meet with the product rep in Seattle and check out a demo unit. The Babyface features up to 192 kHz A/D/A conversion with a SNR of up to 115 dBA., excellent connectivity, and as usual- strong drivers and software. The blue anodized case is attractive and it’s compact size allows the unit to practically fit in the palm of your hand.

RME includes a high quality breakout cable with the unit that allows you to access the unit’s pair of analog I/O and preamps, midi I/O, and headphone output. Unlike most compact recording units, the RME offer an additional 8 digital I/O on lightpipe, allowing you to add an additional 8 channels at 48 kHz recording speeds (4 @ 96 kHz with SMUX2, 2 @ 192 kHz with SMUX4). An included DSUB extension cable is very welcome, allowing the user to get the cable clutter away from the unit.

Upping the ante even further, they even include 1/4″ line/instrument input allowing you to plug in instruments directly for recording right on the side of the unit, along with a 2nd headphone jack, full LED metering, and an intuitive interface to control volume, select inputs, and store/recall settings.
