Rise of the Tomb Raider Screenshots

Crystal Dynamics’ 2013 reboot of Tomb Raider was a sleeper hit, selling over a million copies in the first 48 hours. Voiced and motion captured by actress Camilla Luddington, and animated after model Megan Farquhar, Tomb Raider followed a young Lara Croft as she fought to survive a mysterious island.

If you haven’t had a chance to play Tomb Raider yet, I highly recommend it. It was one of the most surprisingly enjoyable games of 2013 for me, and I’m excited that Crystal Dynamics is working on a sequel, Rise of the Tomb Raider.

Though we don’t yet have a release date for the sequel, we do have a bunch of new high-resolution screenshots showing off what I believe is the game’s Siberian setting. I expect that we’ll learn more about the game at GDC 2015 and beyond.

Now here’s an interesting one. The setting looks completely different than what we see in all the other shots. Where do you think this takes place? It looks a little bit like Jordan to me.

Rise of the Tomb Raider looks fantastic visually. I’m continually impressed by how quickly developers are improving the look of characters, both in terms of how they look, move, and emote. Lara’s face looks very expressive, even in these still photos. I’m looking forward to seeing her in action.

But I do have one minor gripe: it looks like the screenshots have film grain. It may just be the quality of the photos, but I swear there’s a post-processing effect adding the film grain, and that makes me a little sad. If that’s the case, I genuinely hope we’re able to disable it for the inevitable PC version of the game.

Other than that minor gripe, I’m definitely looking forward to getting my hands on Rise of the Tomb Raider.
