Rise of the Tomb Raider — Full Gamescom Gameplay Demo

The Tomb Raider reboot, simply called Tomb Raider, was released in 2013, and as a gamer who had never played any of the other Tomb Raider games, it sort of came out of nowhere. I had virtually no expectations, and save for a few exceptions, the game absolutely blew me away.

This year Crystal Dynamics is treating us to the sequel, Rise of the Tomb Raider. What you’re about to watch is the full Gamescom 2015 gameplay presentation that was shown. This section of the game takes place in Syria, and as you’re about to see, this location poses a slew of interesting questions, such as:

  • Does Lara live on Planet Danger? The entire world seems to crumble at her touch, every step, every breath, bringing her closer to death.
  • How can Lara keep falling dozens of meters, only to shake it off and continue on her way?
  • Does Lara have robot legs? She’s somehow able to jump incredible distances…

and lastly…

  • Are we ever going to see a DirectX 12 version of the game?

On with the trailer…

The trailer weighs in at just over 13 minutes, so pull up a chair and enjoy.

Pretty cool, right? Visually, the game looks fantastic. The gameplay looks like more of the game, and honestly… I think I’m okay with that. I’m sure we’ll see a few improvements, but I can understand why they’re likely not messing with a good formula. My only hope is that there are far less QTE (Quick Time Events), because really, they’re bloody awful.

Rise of the Tomb Raider arrives later this year for Xbox One, and early 2016 for PC. As for Playstation 4? Supposedly end of 2016. Yes, I know… I’m sorry to be the one to break the news. Microsoft managed this using a little old trick called “tons of money.”
