Opel Astra OPC ‘Extreme’ With 300 Horsepower

A quick glance at first and you think what you’re looking at is a modded version of the Hyundai Veloster….sort of. The Opel Astra OPC Extreme is a design study that is set to debut at the Geneva Motor Show and based on the public reaction, it may enter production in limited numbers.

This modified version of the Opel Astra OPC is said to be 220 pounds lighter than the original and will be powered by an upgraded version of the 2.0-liter turbocharged gasoline engine developing just over 300 horsepower. The power from the all-aluminum engine will be transferred via a six-speed manual gearbox and will also feature a limited-slip differential. The concept of the Astra OPC Extreme is derived from the Astra OPC Cup racecar with features handed down such as a carbon fiber hood, roll bar, front spoiler, diffuser, rear wing, engine cover, and suspension-cross bracing.

Even the wheels and roof happen to be carbon fiber which is how they were able to knock off 220 pounds. The carbon fiber roof weighs only 5.7-pounds while the carbon fiber wheels are able to shave off a total of 44 pounds compared to the aluminum alloy wheels on the standard models. Not everything is in carbon though, the fenders have been made out of aluminum and only weigh 1.7-lbs a piece which saves 3.1-lbs per fender. Opel made every pound count and you can count the vehicle costing you an arm and a leg for this segment of vehicles.

No official figures are yet available in terms of performance but the Astra OPC Extreme is said to be very quick and stopping power is provided by the six-piston Brembo braking system with 14.5-inch discs up front. The car will ride on 19-inch wheels and wrapped in 245/35 tires. The spring and dampers will be adjustable depending on your your preference of ride comfort.

Oh and your friends who take advantage of you and get them to drive you everywhere will be very disappointed to know that the rear seats are a thing of the past thanks to the roll bar. The driver and front passenger will be treated to the the specially designed Recarco bucket seats which come with six-point safety belts from Schroth. The steering wheel is carbon fiber reinforced and covered in suede featuring yellow stitching.

Even in stock form, it’s an attractive looking car but the Astra OPC Extreme takes it to a new level. This vehicle definitely needs to be built even if it’s not available for us here in North America.
