The Official RoboCop Reboot Trailer – Starring Jay Baruchel as Alex Murphy!

If you ask me, I’ve got some great parents. I have wonderful childhood memories of watching people get blown to pieces or eviscerated in movies like Terminator 2 and RoboCop. Some people call this bad parenting, but I disagree. These experiences helped shape me… they helped make me the man that I am today! Hmm, right… okay, good point.

Anyway, as is quickly becoming common practice in the movie industry, RoboCop is being rebooted. Yes, the classic 1987 movie that filled my television screen so many times as a child is being remade, for better or worse. I’ve watched the trailer and have some strong feelings about it, so now it’s your turn. Give it a watch and then let’s talk about it.

RoboCop Reboot Trailer

Please note before you watch this… I kind of lied about something in the title: Alex Murphy isn’t actually played by Jay Baruchel, he’s played by Shia LaBeouf. I’m totally not lying about this either, you’ll see.

I kid, I kid… if you didn’t recognize him, the actor playing Murphy, aka RoboCop, is none other than Joel Kinnaman! Yes, that guy… because you – like me – totally know who he is. Yeah, he’s that… guy… from the movies. Well, anyway… he was actually in the American version of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and a few other things, though I don’t remember him from any of them. Thankfully he seems like an excellent actor.

Now, I said I wanted to hear your opinion, and I mean it: what did you think of the trailer?

It certainly looked different than the original, and it was a strange choice to shoot in beautiful Vancouver, Canada when they’re trying to re-create Detroit, but still… I think the RoboCop reboot looks pretty damn fantastic. I was quite pleasantly surprised to see Michael Keaton and Gary Oldman, and less pleasantly surprised to see Samuel L. Jackson. Man, he’s in everything.

Release Date?

The RoboCop reboot probably does have an exact release date, but unfortunately I’m not privy to it. What I do know, though, is that we’ll see it in theaters sometime in 2014. That’s not too far off, but still gives me plenty of time to come up with more terrible RoboCop related photoshops.

  1. I’m generally not a fan of late-80’s reboots, mainly because I saw most of them in the theater. Usually, too much back-story is added, or action sequences cut out any semblance of understanding.

This time, though, I am most impressed with the huge gun da-da-da sound. Does anyone remember the Robocop arcade game?

  2. I was looking forward to this but I am not that sure. It’s not going to have that satirical edge but the action will no doubt be bombastic.

  3. Hmmm. I don’t know, normally I’m a pretty strong opponent to all of Hollywood’s incessant remakes, but this one doesn’t actually look too bad and despite everything I quite enjoyed Total Recall last year. I’ll give it a shot mainly because I’d like to see how well they realize that world with modern effects. Bonus points for Keaton, Oldman and Jackson too!
