introducing the Navdy

Unfortunately it’s all too common to hear about road accidents that were caused because people were on their phones. While PSA’s go out constantly saying people shouldn’t use phones while driving and different gadgets have been introduced to try and decrease it, there’s never been anything particularly effective. All of that may change though with this new gadget that revolutionizes phones and driving. While it comes with a warning that you do still need to pay attention to driving, it does significantly reduce distractions and allows you to keep your hands on the wheel at all times, something that’s fantastic for car safety.

So what is this? It’s called the Navdy and it essentially sits on your dashboard and projects your phone onto the windshield. The way it works is the Navdy plugs into your car and then attaches to your dashboard. It comes with three different attachment sizes for different cars so it’s never sitting too high or too low (great for safety). Your phone sits inside of it, and as you receive calls, texts or driving directions, it projects all of that information directly onto your windshield so you don’t need to look away from the road.

You may be thinking this sounds great, except once you see a notification, how do you respond to it without reaching over and grabbing the phone? The Navdy has a little controller that attaches to your steering wheel, which is how you control your device. As they explain themselves, it acts much like an iPod control wheel. The middle is a button and the outer edge spins. This is adjustable as well so you can place it any way that’s comfortable for you to use while driving.

You also can use your hands when you receive a call. If you receive a call and you don’t want to answer, you move your hand to the right and if you do, to the left. This is no different to scratching your chin if you were driving, making it quite safe.

However, the Navdy isn’t cheap. At $799, it seems almost outright extortionate. With that being said though, can you really put a price on your safety? If you’re going to be using your phone in the car or you want a safer way to use your phone while using directions this may be the answer.

They also offer a payment plan where you can pay just $33/month at 0% financing up to 24 months if you’d like the Navdy but can’t pay for it all upfront.

This is an interesting concept and not one that’s been done before. If you want to learn more about it, then it’s been featured on the Ellen Degeneres show so that way you can see it in action and decide if this neat gadget is worth the money for you.
