Metalmorphosis – Giant Mirrored Face by David Cerny

I was trying to come up with a artsy and sophisticated way of describing Metalmorphosis, but I’ve decided that the best way is simply to say that this sculpture is a giant, sliced up mirrored face, that rotates each slice independent of every other slice. If you’ve seen either Hellraiser or Lawnmower Man, perhaps you’ll agree with me when I say that this reminds me of a terrifying amalgamation of the two lead characters. Not only does the face rotate in varied and creepy ways, but the mouth also spews a constant stream of water into the basic below, effectively making it a fountain.

The sculptors creator, David Cerny, designed this piece for the American Asset Corporations 3701 Whitehall Corporate Center in North Carolina. Why they would want a giant metal head I couldn’t say, but it’s an interesting move just the same. The sculpture is made of 14 tons of stainless steel, shaped int0 7 rotating portions. Without the rotating bits, this would just be a run of the mill giant shiny metal face, but with the addition of 7 points of movement, well… that brings Metalmorphosis to a whole new level.

Notice how random and sporadic the dissecting face sections are? There’s a reason for that. David’s team came up with custom software that allows each part of the face to know where every other part is at all times. If that’s not creepy enough, David can actually control the statue via the internet. I can’t help but picture him cackling maniacally from his secret art-lair in the Czech Republic.

Metalmorphosis dissecting Can you imagine passing out from over consumption of alcohol and waking up next to this? I think it would be quite the experience. Endless void of a background, flat dead lighting, reflections on the water… complete silence.

Metalmorphosis is very strange indeed, but not half so strange as many of the other projects he shows off on his website. You’ll see what I’m talking about.
