The Future Is Now – Mercedes-Benz Future Truck 2025

Just for fun, my wife and I from time to time discuss the idea of me becoming a truck driver and traveling across North America while she tags along. It’s certainly not something we would seriously consider but I’m sure there are couples (with no kids) out there who are probably doing something like this. I have an interest in all types of vehicles and the Mercedes-Benz Future Truck 2025 is definitely one of them. The truck is set to premiere at the 2014 International Commercial Vehicle show (IAA) and features state-of-the-art technology.

One of the major highlights on the Mercedes-Benz Future Truck 2025 is its autonomous driving system which has been tested in “realistic traffic conditions” at speed as high as 50mph on a section of the A14 motorway in Germany. According to Mercedes, the system works independently of traffic with the vehicle adapting speed within the permitted limit and maintaining a set safety distance from any traffic traveling ahead of the truck. The truck uses a number of radar sensors which scan the road ahead and around the truck, constantly sending information to all of systems in place. It also features a warning system that warns the driver about an imminent collision with stationary objects as well as a Blind Spot Assist system which notifies the driver about other road users when turning.

Many vehicle manufacturers along with Mercedes-Benz predict that in the future, our cars and trucks will communicate and exchange information between each other:

Communication between vehicles is also standardized. The range of these continuous sent messages is a radius of around 500 m. The vehicles inform each other about their movements, so that they can respond to them immediately in anticipatory mode. This includes reacting to vehicles joining a motorway, or when approaching the end of a traffic tailback, for example. The more vehicles are communicating with each other on these routes, the more dynamically and flexibly they are able to respond to one another and together.”

“In an ideal scenario, an uninterrupted chain of communication forms along a route that rigorously informs the driver and vehicle about road and traffic conditions a long way ahead on their journey.

The design of the Mercedes-Benz Future Truck 2025 is certainly futuristic looking with soft lines, a massive Mercedes emblem, and very unique LED bulbs which illuminate the front end of the truck. The LED lights change from white to blue when the driver is in the autonomous mode. The truck also features a very spacious cabin which features the captain’s seat which is close to the steering wheel while the passenger’s luxurious looking seat is situated in the back right corner of the cabin.
