Lighter & Faster: Porsche Boxster Spyder

A few years ago Porsche introduced a stripped down version of the Boxster, a car that was aimed at the purist. That car didn’t even have an automatic convertible top, it came with a gimmicky tent-looking top that was hard to put on and was for emergency use only.

Now Porsche has introduced another such car, based on the second generation Boxster. The car is called the Boxster Spyder and it too comes with a tent-looking roof, at least it is semi-automatic and doesn’t look half bad when it’s up.

The fabric top is manually operated but the rear storage compartment opens automatically at the push of a button. With the top down, the car has a very nice roadster look with two humps on the trunk. The Porsche Boxster Spyder is also only offered with a 6-speed manual transmission and doesn’t come with a radio or air conditioning, all in the name of saving weight. Although the radio and air conditioning units can be put in at the owner’s request, at no extra cost. The car is also equipped with lighter seats and a new steering wheel.

The Boxster Spyder is powered by a 3.8 liter flat-six engine, producing 370 horsepower. The lighter Boxster reaches 100 km/h (62 mph) in 4.5 seconds and reaches a top speed of 180 mph. The car also rides 20 mm lower and uses brakes from the 911 Carrera.
