Life is Short – Time to Quit Your Shitty Job

I love many kinds of art, but let’s be honest… most of the art I feature simply exists to dazzle and entertain you.

There’s nothing wrong with that. Art for the sake of beauty and even entertainment is a good thing. In fact, it’s part of the reason that Unfinished Man exists. But art is also a brilliant way to convey ideas. Ideas about war, famine, the human condition… yes, even ideas about working a shitty job that you absolutely fucking hate.

Life is Short.

We’re alive for the blink of an eye, and then we’re dead in the ground, snuffed out of existence. We’re getting better and better at delaying the inevitable – and maybe one day we’ll even find a way to cheat death – but I’ll tell you one thing: life is still too precious to waste on a job you hate.

I’ve been there. I’ve been that guy who simply went with the flow, working a job I couldn’t stand for year after year. It was terrible, but you know what? It was safe, and I was reasonably sure that I could expect at least my shitty income until I decided to retire. What’s the word for that… job security?

This person probably has job security. Sure looks like he’s enjoying himself, eh? It’s fair to say that this scene is a bit of an exaggeration, but not by a whole lot. There are plenty of people working rubbish jobs like these. Heck, maybe this is you.

I’m not going to narrate each and every picture. Instead, I would like you to think about your life as you browse through these advertisements. Are any of these eerily familiar? Do they make you feel more than a bit uncomfortable? We’ll talk about that at the end.

My point here is very simple: life is short.

That means different things for different people, but if you’re like me, perhaps your definition will include something about avoiding soul-crushing jobs with intense vigilance. It’s easy to fall into the trap of “oh, it’s just temporary”, and the next thing you realize is that seven years have gone by, and you’re in the exact same spot you were when you started, and hating yourself all the more for not doing something about it.
