Wait, There’s An Inexpensive Standing Desk That Can Order You Lunch?

About a year ago I decided to try switching to a standing desk for a little while. I had read about the health benefits for some time, and was tired of sitting on my ass all day. The problem at the time was that standing desks were friggin’ expensive, like $1,000+ expensive. I thought that was pretty stupid and decided to build my own using inexpensive parts from Ikea.

I stuck with the whole standing desk thing, and that inexpensive Ikea based standing desk I put together has held up pretty well. Since then, though, the standing desk market has expanded quite a bit. Standing desks are no longer the real of eccentric people around the office; they’ve become pretty common.

They’ve also dropped significantly in price. Marketed as The World’s First Smart, Connected Office Desk, Autonomous Desk is a relatively inexpensive standing desk (more on price later) that is so much more than just a desk. It does what you would expect, which is shift from sitting to standing modes, but it’s also intelligent. It learns your preferred height settings and adjusts them when you approach the desk.

Oh, and did I mention that it has a built in personal assistant? Yes, you can even ask the desk to order you lunch, dim the lights, or adjust the temperature. It’s intelligent and connected, and it wants… to… kill you.

(I’m kidding)

But no, seriously… the Autonomous Desk is very impressive. If the AI doesn’t do it for you, fair enough. Seriously, who actually uses Siri or Google Now? The desk is still full of other useful features like built in USB ports, a wireless phone charger, speakers to blast out music and annoy your co-workers, and perhaps most importantly a coat hook.

So, you’re probably wondering how much this sucker costs. Don’t worry, it’s actually not too bad! You can get one of these for as low as $299, but… the version you’re going to want will be about $500. The base price being $399, and then $99 in shipping on top of that. Even so, it’s still less than half the price of most standing desks on the market, and it’s smart.

If you’re interested in learning more about the Autonomous Desk, head over to the Kickstarter page and have a look around. They’ve blown well past the original funding goal at this point, and the desks should launch in just a few months. As you know if you’ve ever helped fund something on Kickstarter, no one misses their release date on the platform.
