How Do You Photograph a Ghost? Like This…

I’ve never been big on the whole horror genre. I saw many of the classic horror movies when I was a child, but they never really did it for me.

I mean, sure… Alien is one of my very favorite movies, but I liked it for the Science Fiction elements, not the horror. But I think I’ve figured out the problem: most horror movies just go for buckets of blood and cheap scares. That’s just too simple, it’s not cerebral enough.

Christoper McKenney’s Horror Surrealist Photography

This morning while I was eating my breakfast, I saw a collection of “horror surrealist photography” by one Pennsylvania born Christopher Ryan McKenney. I’m sharing the set with you now, and as you’ll see, there isn’t a drop of blood to be found. But where these lack in gore, they more than make up for in straight up creepiness, and… nostalgia?

I realize how disturbing that may sound, so let me temper that by saying that they remind me of scenes out of a Lana Del Rey album, but, you know… with a horror vibe. I’m telling you, I’m not crazy!

Aside from the haunting imagery itself, I think the toning looks fantastic. The de-saturated colors really work for this collection.

Now, imagine people, ghosts… entities, whatever you want to call them, walking around like this. I would love to see imagery like this used in a movie.

Imagine finding something like this in the forest. You’re lost, hungry… the sun is setting, and you find a floating mirror held up by a hands without a body.

Actually, I take it back… meeting this woman would be a lot worse. I’m assuming she’s not out and about to chop wood and shit in a bucket.

So… pretty creepy, right?

I’ve actually only included a handful of photos from the original set, so if you’re interested in seeing a whole lot more then you can head over to Christopher’s website and take a look around. Believe me, it’s well worth the visit.
