How Difficult is it to Pick a Master Lock?

If you are trying to lock up your things with any level of security, you might wish to avoid this lock model from Master Lock.

A 4-pack of the locks can be bought for around $30 on Amazon, and the item has mostly positive evaluations. However, as YouTube user ‘bosnianbill‘ shows, the lock can be broken open in a matter of seconds with very little effort.

In his series on overcoming security gadgets, he reveals just how easy it is to open the lock with neither key nor fancy tool. Just putting pressure on the lock and rapping the side of it with something hard like a hammer breaks it open entirely. The hack doesn’t even need a lock pick.

The rapping method makes it possible to open a pin tumbler lock without harming it. The cylinder-based design on the gadget uses pins to avoid it from being turned. Applying force to the lock shifts the leading pins and pops the lock right open.

The video is a bit longer than a minute, but you get the idea. Picking the lock took ‘bosnianbill’ about five seconds.

“How easy is that?” says ‘bosnianbill’.

This is a good reminder that locks are really for honest people. If someone wants to get past a lock, they’ll find a way. Some locks are just a little easier to ‘pick’ than others.
