Much like the man giving a deposition in this video, I’m having trouble defining the point of this article I’m writing, and that you’re now reading.
You see, I’ve been reading a lot about “the legal system” lately. I say that in quotes, because in actuality I’ve been reading about the US legal system, and I happen to live in Canada. Our legal system is often just as broken, but let’s focus on the US for the purposes of this article.
Defining a Photocopier
What… is a photocopier? To someone like you or me, it’s a device that duplicates the markings on a piece of paper onto another piece of paper. We use them in our homes and offices (if we like to kick it old-school) and, well… you get the idea. But for someone working the legal system? Not so fast.
What you’re about to watch is a reenactment, word for word, of the dialogue and events of a deposition. The video is a little long, but I promise it’s worth it.
So, what did you think of that?
Personally, I wasn’t sure whether to laugh or cringe. I think I did a little of both.
You see, I have every reason to believe that this type of behavior is the norm both in the United States and the world at large. Large companies bullshitting lawyers, lawyers bullshitting other people… on and on it goes. I could complain about this for hours, but I’ll spare you and instead recommend that you pick up a copy of The Divide by Matt Taibi.
You want to read about mass systemic corruption? He’s the man to show you what’s going on, at least with respect to the global banking industry. I’m about half way through this book and have barely been able to put it down. He paints a very compelling picture for complete reform of the legal system, but as I said, check it out yourself.
