Having a pair of balls is good, especially when it can save lives and prevent diseases. We are -of course- referring to the Solarball, developed by Monash University grad student, Jonathan Liow. As part of Liow’s final year project during his Bachelor of Industrial Design, the Solarball was developed to filter up to three liters of water per day by harnessing the power of the sun.
The spherical shaped unit absorbs the sunlight which causes the dirty water inside to evaporate. As the water evaporates, the contaminants are separated from the water, producing drinkable condensation which is collected and stored. The simple yet effective design is very user-friendly and durable. The weather resistant construction of the Solarball makes it perfect for people that live in hot, wet, tropical climates and have little to no access to resources.
The Solarball has also been named as a finalist in the 2011 Australian Design Awards – James Dyson Award and will be exhibited at the Milan International Design Fair next month (April 2011).

I don’t think that there’s actually a price available for it yet. In fact, I don’t believe that it’s for sale unfortunately. 🙁
