The Golden-i Headset – Listen to Music, See Through Walls… You Know.

As I’ve said so many times before, we’re living in a very interesting time.

We’re making breakthroughs in many fields, from space travel to wearable computing, and for better or worse, I believe this trend is only going to accelerate. But what will we do with our new found powers? Will we enter a golden age, a second renaissance, or will our energies simply be focused towards programs like PRISM?

No one can be certain, but one thing’s for sure: our police will soon have the ability to see through walls, see in the dark, and identify suspects immediately using facial recognition, all from a single headset.

It doesn’t look like much, but the Golden-i grants its wearer a whole slew of seemingly super human abilities. If you’ve ever played Deus Ex: Human Revolution, well… it’s a little bit like Adam Jensen’s augmented eyes, but, you know… actually real.

If you ask me, black with a piano finish would look a whole lot better, but in any case… check out this video showing off the Golden-i in action in a fake police scenario. If you watch this and don’t think of The Predator or Deus Ex, well… I’ll eat crow.

So, what did you think of the technology? I think you’ll agree that the video was super cheesy, but the tech… well, I don’t know about you, but I’ll be interested to see what people will do with this when the technology inevitable hits the mainstream market. Though Ikanos has developed this for law enforcement, I don’t believe for one second that other companies won’t emulate the technology for the average consumer. After all, Ikanos aren’t really doing anything unique here… they’ve simply combined a series of already available technologies into one sleek – though low quality looking – package.

Here’s a more detailed breakdown of the device…

Thoughts?

If you could have one of these for yourself, what would you do with it? Do you think that this will simply be a tool to help automate tasks that police already do, like checking license plates and identifying people, or is there simply too much room for abuse? Let me know your thoughts in the comments below.
