My Girlfriend and I Finally Committed…to a New Mattress

After some couples move in together, their first big purchase is a puppy. For my girlfriend and I, it was a Tango 2 in 1 mattress.

When we first moved into our new apartment, everything seemed great. Over the first few months, we got everything furnished and decorated. She added her touches that made everything a lot nicer than they had been in my bachelor pad with my roommates.

The only thing that wasn’t comfortable was our mattress. We had gone with a bargain mattress, pretty much choosing the first one we saw based on price alone. Neither of us knew anything about mattress shopping and we assumed that it didn’t matter.

Oh, boy, does it matter! Within a month or so, I started getting back pain like I’d never experienced before – sharp pain that would shoot down my legs when I moved. I figured a new mattress was in order and knew that this time around, we were going to do our research.

What I discovered is that a quality mattress is about more than comfort or even price. In order to choose the best mattress, you’ve got to understand the different types of mattresses, as well as the different elements that go into their design.

To Foam or Not to Foam?

My girlfriend was set on a memory foam mattress. Memory foam was first created by NASA in the 70’s, and there’s nothing more awesome than sleeping on something that was designed for astronauts. Over time, mattress manufacturers began incorporating it into their products. It feels great because it squishes down and cradles your body as you lay on it.

I was worried about memory foam, though, because I read that it can retain heat, making sleep incredibly uncomfortable. That’s why mattress makers have started using new kinds of memory foam that help distribute your body heat, rather than trapping you in a foam oven as you slumber.

Upping the cool-sleeping ante, some mattresses even feature keep-cool covers that work to regulate your body temperature as you sleep. Since I tend to wake up with all of the blankets kicked off, anything that helps me sleep cooler is a plus.

Hard or Soft? Tango Brings It All Together

After suffering through the sore back blues for a while, I was worried about investing in a new mattress. I assumed I needed something firmer for back support, but what if we invested in one that ended up being too firm? What if it was too soft and made things worse? That’s when we discovered a mattress miracle.

After doing our homework (both online and by visiting stores and laying on a lot of sample mattresses), we finally found the perfect place to lay our heads – the Tango 2 in 1 mattress. It’s a two-sided mattress, with pillow-plush softness on one side and a cushion-firm mattress on the other. We’re starting out with the firm side to see how my back reacts. If we need something softer, we can rest assured knowing that a pillow-plush sleep awaits us with just a quick turn of the mattress. Only time will tell, but so far, my back is feeling great!
