Foldboat – The Boat That Folds

Here’s something you don’t see every day, a real working boat that can be folded and unfolded just like the paper boats we used to make when we were kids.  The boat is called Foldboat (obviously) and is the brainchild of British designers Max Frommeld and Arno Mathies.  The idea for the Foldboat came during a paper-folding workshop (I didn’t know such workshops existed) where participants used single pieces of paper to create various objects.

The Foldboat is made out of a single hard-shell seamless piece of plastic with live hinges.  When the boat is opened up, it measures 8.2 feet (2.5 meters) long and when not in use; it folds into a 59.1” x 31.5” (150cm x 80cm) package.

As you can see from the pictures below, the Foldboat is not just another concept that never sees the light of day, it actually works (floats) and can be used on calm waters.  It’s a pretty cool idea because you can transport it easily even in small cars and could also be useful in emergency situations (like a flood), maybe?
