Fine Living – Patio Barbecue Edition

Warm weather is here and there’s an almost visceral urge to be outdoors to take in the sun. Patio life is in the air, too. We have ideas of inviting friends and family for delectable barbecue and killer cocktails, just because.

Cooking outside seems easy and breezy, and everything that’s grilled or barbecued just tastes better. Kids are always completely satisfied with a hamburger or hot dog roasted over the coals served with some French fries on the side. (Don’t forget the ketchup!) But adults sometimes like to plan a party that’s really something special.

So, let’s host a perfect backyard patio barbecue. The casualness of being outdoors, combined with a last-minute “drop by for barbecue” for a few or a printed invitation well-orchestrated feast for hundreds, makes everyone happy. Here are a few things to get the party started:

Patio Party Essentials
You want to make this a memorable party. Plan the barbecue theme first, such as the red and white colors of the Maple Leaf or the red-white-and-blue stars and stripes for the July 4th holiday. Use your imagination and think about simple decorations, e.g. a tablecloth or patio chair pillows in the party theme color.

Check on the state of your grill, too. What kind do you plan to use? Is it completely clean and shining, inviting your guests to ride side saddle as your guiding hand perfectly sears delicious steaks, chops, burgers, hot dogs, and sausages?

Barbecue Menu
Think about your menu.  Naturally, you should focus on the meat. Vegetarian friends may agree to come to the party, so you should probably consider an assortment of veggie burgers, hot dogs, or sausages for your non-carnivorous friends to enjoy.

As we’re imagining the guests above hanging around the savory scents the grill, why not buy a wide assortment of — meats — for your party? If you’re in the mood to marinate and grill, add mouthwatering ribs to the menu.

Fresh corn on the cob and your favorite baked beans recipe are gorgeous additions to the menu. Add fresh vegetables, cold salads, ripe fruits (in a salad or offered in several large bowls), and bottled water and beverages to the table. Alternatively, place several self-serve beverage dispensers (filled with lemonade or fresh fruit water) on the table.Cut open a perfectly chilled melon and serve in wedges to add to amazing flavor and color contrasts.

Patio and Outdoor Living Space
Start with a pristine outdoor living space–on the patio or around the pool. Many people have patios but don’t use them, and this is a terrible waste. Your patio can actually increase your available living space.

relaxing outside

When planning your patio barbecue, make sure the patio furniture is safe, clean, and comfortable: entice your visitors to enjoy a relaxing cocktail, unsalted nuts, and crudites as the heavenly scent of charcoal or hickory fills the air. If it’s time for new patio furnishings, check out Cabana Coast for the latest styles of modern patio furniture.

Consider the outdoor lighting if hosting a barbecue at dusk or in the evening. If friends and family have children, consider games and activities for them–and plan music for everyone.

Your guests will be ravenous! Provide plenty of healthy finger food until the main and meaty event is ready!
