Far Cry 3 Cinematic Trailer – The Mysterious Island

Last year, I remember hearing rumblings of a Far Cry 3 title in the works. Details were scarce, and I didn’t really think anything of it until now. Today Ubisoft released a Far Cry 3 cinematic trailer, and we finally get a chance to see what the game is all about. From what I can tell, Far Cry 3 looks like a bizarre mix of The Hangover and Cloverfield, with a ton of shooting and violence thrown in for good measure. It’s an odd combination, but I’m intrigued. The team did such a good job on Far Cry 2 that I can’t help but be excited.

The trailer starts out with a group of friends pulling up onto a mysterious island, and then promptly drinking themselves into oblivion with a group of dangerous, angry individuals. I have a feeling you can see where this is going, but I won’t spoil it for you. Just go watch the trailer and pretend to be surprised when the people are kidn… er, politely given hospitality by the bar’s owner and proprietor.

Really? Really?? They thought it would be a good idea to get wasted with these type of people? I mean, just look at them… one of them even has a mohawk; clearly he’s a suicidal murderer. Aside from their completely unsurprising capture, the tone of the game looks pretty damn interesting. The team is obviously taking the game back to its island roots (sans Serva Yerli, who’s a dick), and I’m fine with that. Far Cry 3 looks different enough than the last one that it’s forgivable. What isn’t forgivable, though, is the dubstep. I realize that all the cool kids like it these days, but it’s getting just a little bit played out, and aside from the occasional well timed sequence, it really didn’t fit the game.

If Ubisoft can capture all the elements that made Far Cry 2 such a great game, such as the expansive world and interesting gun play, while reducing annoyances like endlessly driving around, I’ll be a happy man.

Far Cry 3 arrives September 4th, 2012 for PC, Xbox360, and PS3.
