The Fabric of Landscapes – Aerial Mashup Photography by Joseph Ford

It’s high noon, and your plane prepares to make its final decent into an exciting new city. You look out the window, and what do you see?

If you’re like me, you get a kick out of quickly trying to analyze a new city in the minutes before touch down. It’s a little bit like using Google Earth, but… you know, actually real. You can tell a lot about a city from the sky. You’ll start to recognize where the main entertainment hubs are… you’ll see whether the city invests in roads and infrastructure, and whether what type of sports are popular. And if you’re British photographer Joseph Ford, you may even see designer clothing brands and fabrics.

What do you See?

Tell me something, do you actually know anyone that owns a quilt? I’ve seen quilts maybe a handful of times my entire life, and I’m fairly certain each time was at my grandmother’s friends place, a woman who was equally geriatric. Yes, I have a feeling they aren’t all that common anymore, but I’ll tell you one thing: the world often looks like the patchwork of a quilt when seen from above.

As we go through the photos, I’m going to list off where each one was taken. Unfortunately I’m not sure what pieces of clothing Joseph used (save for the first one perhaps), so you’ll just have to use your imagination for that part.

Mahebourg, Mauritius

Sardinia

Sicily

No, I didn’t screw up… there really were a lot of shots of Sicily, and that’s perfectly fine with me. If you ask me, the place looks pretty damn cool. Also worth noting is that the very first picture, way up at the top of this post, was taken in Morocco. It’s by far my favorite, and so I decided to post it up first, probably “ruining” the remainder of the collection for you. I’m so very sorry.

That’s It??

So, let me tell you why I like this collection so much, and then I want to hear from you. Have you ever seen something or heard an idea that made you go “man, that’s so simple, why didn’t I think of that?”. Well, this collection of photographs is sort of like that for me. It’s such a simple idea, and yet it’s very, very effective. I wouldn’t go so far as to say it’s moving, but it is very interesting, and that counts for something.

If you’re interested in seeing more of Joseph’s work, you can do so on his website. Take a good look around, because he’s done some very, very cool work.
