Every man gets to that point in his life where it’s just time. It’s time to surprise the woman of your dreams with that all important question, but to do it, you’ll need a beautiful ring first. However, it’s not as simple as just popping down to your local store! It requires a lot of careful planning and thought.
So, to help you out, I present the following expert engagement ring shopping tips. It’s going to be a long process, so make sure you’re in it for the long haul! Though, if you are planning a proposal, I’m guessing that you are!
Find out her ring size – without her knowing!
This is probably the hardest part of the entire process, but it’s the first thing you’ll have to do. All the usual tactics apply, like asking a close friend to do some digging or simply taking one of her current rings with you. You could even trace one of her rings, stealthily of course! It’s important not to give the game away, especially at this early stage.
Buy online – it’s cheaper
Most purchases are made online these days, and there’s no reason why this one should be different. There are a number of online specialists that will allow you to browse their inventory from the comfort of your sofa. The most difficult thing about engagement ring shopping is the trudging through jewelry stores. You’ll eliminate that concern, fast!
You could view Davidson & Licht online, once you know what your lady is after, that is. It’s generally cheaper to use the internet too, as the absence of a storefront reduces costs. You also have more options online, rather than one or two local stores.
Don’t be afraid to negotiate
Working out a deal with a jeweler isn’t unheard of. Some seasons tend to be quieter than others for them, and if it’s a quiet season, you have more negotiating room. Ask for a 2 or 3 percent discount – off the cost of a ring, that’s huge. If you’re paying cash, you increase the likelihood of them saying yes to a price cut. Paying on card comes with a card fee, so if you pay with cash you can slash this cost of your total.
Choose an unorthodox shape
Unless your lady has made it clear that she wants a traditional round diamond, consider getting a different shape.
Round diamonds are the most popular form of the gem, and as such, they carry a bigger price tag. Shapes like hearts and ovals are less popular, and can prove cheaper. Round diamonds are popular for a reason though – they’re generally assumed to be of a higher quality. Do your research first.
Don’t focus on the brand name
Just as is the case when you’re buying food, brand isn’t everything. You can get a basic loaf of bread for much cheaper than a branded one, and it’s largely the same thing. The same applies here, and if you want to save a bit of cash, look for lesser-known brands. At the end of the day, a ring is a ring, and will function just as expected no matter what the price.
