Electronic Cigarettes – A Classic “Fashion Accessory” Evolved?

We write a lot about fashion accessories because they’re one of the most cost-effective ways to add new wardrobe energy. Everyone knows that neck-ties used to be considered an accessory for the fashionable man… and now they’re things that women steal from their fathers’ wardrobes to sew into funky short skirts.

So, what are today’s newest, coolest fashion accessories?

Bogie and Bacall: A Lo

I was watching old movies from the 1940s the other day and, as film lovers everywhere know, lighting up a cigarette frequently happened as romantically involved or flirtatious individuals gazed into each others’ eyes. Although the censors of the time didn’t allow viewers to watch lovers during sex, we sometimes see two obviously satisfied people sharing a smoke.

Today, we might see actors smoking a cigarette that really isn’t tobacco. For example, actors on “Mad Men” smoke herb cigarettes. (That fact got some fans into smoking lavender and all kinds of things!)

E-Cigs: A Fashionable Accessory?

The old movies and new television got me thinking. Cigarettes in those days were an effective accessory. But now that so many people are properly enlightened about the health hazards of tobacco cigarettes, I started thinking about e-cigs as accessories.

Celebrities tend to wave them about. I was especially entertained by actress Katherine Heigl’s very dramatic e-cig flair on late night television. She’s particularly outspoken about her favorable e-cig opinions.

Where We Stand

E-cigs get a lot of reporters on either side of the Atlantic pretty excited these days. While we’re not advocating that people start using e-cigs or vaping if they don’t already smoke, there are reasons to believe that vaping could help smokers quit as they reduce inhaled carcinogens.

According to ABC News, (2013) it’s actually impossible to say whether e-cigs are completely safe right now. Researchers just haven’t done that many studies on the health effects of inhaling nicotine vapor over the years because e-cigs have only been a smoking option for about ten years.

However, according to available studies, e-cigs’ vapor seems to have many fewer toxins than traditional tobacco cigarettes. A report by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration found just nine questionable items in e-cigs vape versus more than eleven THOUSAND contaminates in tobacco smoke!

Take a Deep Breath…

So, for those people who question the safety of e-cigarettes and regular tobacco smokes, we hear you. But if I’ve got to choose between less than ten or greater than eleven thousand toxins going into my lungs… yeah, that’s an easy decision.

Keep in mind that where e-cigs are manufactured can make a difference. For example, the Intellicig electronic cigarette is manufactured in the UK to high quality standards. (There’s quite a bit of political jawboning about imports of e-cigs into our North American markets – perhaps because of the massive tobacco company lobbying effort?)

The Risks of Breathing in the City

For anyone who’s thinking ahead of me, what about the actual levels of pollution in the air we breathe? The American Cancer Society reported that there are also risks of taking a deep breath in the city.

Unless one lives in the country – far, far away from any metropolitan area – contaminants and toxins present in the air for all breathing life forms might subject everyone to long-term health risks.

Conclusion

As always, none of us advocates becoming a new smoker. There are health risks, and potential social ones, to smoking or chewing tobacco and no one needs to tell a smoker that he or she needs to quit.

Like nicotine patches or gum prescribed by doctors to smokers with a desire to quit for years, e-cigarettes can help smokers quit. They might also look more fashionable in the process.
