EcoXPower From EcoXGear – Pedal Power to the Rescue

Listening to your music on your phone/mp3 player while enjoying a long bike ride only to realize you’re battery is running low – been there, done that. If I don’t have music to listen to, then my “physical battery” starts to run low as I have no motivational music to power my lazy ass up those hills. It’s situations like this where I have the genius idea of coming up with a device to charge my electronics using the pedaling power of my bicycle.

But thankfully, I don’t have to day dream about this idea of mine since it already exists. It’s true; all the good ideas are already taken. The folks over at EcoXGear have a product, the EcoXPower, which charges any USB device using your very own pedaling power from your bicycle.

ExoXPower charging kit for bikes

The EcoXPower will charge USB devices as well as the front and rear lights of your bicycle for those evening rides. This kit comes with a water-resistant touchscreen case for devices such as GPS units, iPhone, and Android devices. This case can also be mounted to the handlebars. Other goodies included in the kit are ultra-bright front and rear LED lights for the bicycle with ON/OFF switch, and a power jack and cable connection. The device mounts to the front wheel hub via a universal mount.

As the wheels on your bicycle turn, the EcoXPower’s clutch engages between the tire’s spokes, fueling a generator that powers the lights, the built-in lithium ion rechargeable battery, and power jack for your USB device. The EcoXPower is available at EcoXGear for $99.

How EcoXPower works diagram

Whether it’s worth the $99 price tag depends on how often you ride as well as the amount of night time riding you will be doing. One thing that I’m curious about is the amount of friction that is created by the device and whether or not the EcoXPower can be disengaged without uninstalling the entire unit? It’s definitely worth a look though.
