Dishonored – Developer Diary: Creating Immersion

Dishonored is one of those games that simply appeared out of nowhere. That’s true of any original IP, but given how rare those are these days, well… you get the picture.

In today’s developer diary, Viktor Antonov – the visual design director on the game, and one of the masterminds behind the visuals in Half-Life 2 – tells us a little bit about the world of Dunwall, and the evolution its gone through since the team first started the project. Victor explains his process in depth with the help of none other than Harvey Smith, a man who – for those of you who have played Thief, System Shock, or Deus Ex – needs no introduction.

I’m always excited to hear developers explain the lengths they’ve gone to create an immersive, realistic world, and even more excited when those promises actually come true. Usually I would simply be content to wait and see, but given that Harvey and a lot of other big names have thrown their weight behind Dishonored, I can’t help but get just a little bit excited. Harvey Smith helped create two of my favorite games ever, Deus Ex and Thief 2, and for that I give him my blind faith – just this once. Harvey, you had better not disappoint.

If the gameplay is anywhere near as interesting as the world that Antonov and the other world builders have created, then much like Corvo, I may just disappear for a while. If the previous videos were any indication, then I may have my hands full for a while. Shadows, sword play, and spending time with Carrie Fisher await me!

Release Date?

Dishonored isn’t quite ready to come out of the oven, but it’s almost there. If nothing changes, and all is just in the world, Dishonored will hit store shelves on October 9th, 2012, for PC, Xbox360, and PS3. Do everyone a favor and get it for the PC. We all know that’s the best way to play it.
