Dirty Car Art By Scott Wade

In my younger years, I was never much of a trouble maker. And my idea of being “bad” was something along the lines of writing “wash me” on a super dirty car. Yeah, I was a pretty boring kid. Believe it or not but artist Scott Wade has turned his love of writing on dirty cars into a way of making money and traveling around the world. Unfortunately for the rest of us, it’s not as simple as just writing something on a car.

The Wade family lived on a long dirt road and their family vehicles were always covered in a fine layer of dust. Back in the day, Scott would draw funny faces on the back window as his father was an amateur cartoonist. Scott developed his own style of cartooning and started implementing new techniques like using his finger nails to create fine lines. He eventually implemented the use of brushes when one day he was enjoying a Popsicle and he chewed the stick which resulted in a “feathery” stick. That frayed stick allowed him to create a more detailed piece of art and Dirty Car Art was discovered.

Scott Wade does two main types of paint. One style is natural where the car is covered in dirt from day to day use without it going in for a car wash. He refers to the second style as artificial and usually does this style of artwork when requested by clients. The artificial style involves a light coating of almond oil to the back window so that dirt can stick to the glass. He then blows the same type of dust used on movie sets and blows it on to the glass with a hair blow dryer.
