Have you ever played any of Sid Meire’s Civilization games?
They’ve been around for ages, and though they always seemed like something I would enjoy, I just never got around to playing any of them. I think that’s a shame, and this fall I’m going to give this franchise the attention it deserves. You see, Civilization: Beyond Earth is coming out, and there’s almost nothing that gets me as excited as space.
Space… the final Civilization Frontier
I’ve been interested in space travel since I was a young boy, and that interest has only grown as I’ve gotten older. I’ve been following SpaceX avidly, and reading voraciously on population and climate change. Our world has, shall we say, been in better shape… and our population is growing at a rate that many believe is unsustainable. Simply put, I believe we need more room.
But enough of the climate speech sermon for the time being, you’re here to see the announcement trailer for Civilization: Beyond Earth. Let’s take a look!
So, as you probably noticed, that didn’t actually show any gameplay footage. That’s pretty typical of an announcement trailer, but I’m looking forward to seeing some “real” stuff all the same. Having said that, I really liked the vibe from this trailer. Maybe it’s just because I love space, and maybe it’s completely unwarranted, but I think this could make for a really interesting game, and I hope that’s actually the case when they release it later this year.

Sid Meier’s Civilization: Beyond Earth is a new science-fiction-themed entry into the award-winning Civilization series. Set in the future, global events have destabilized the world leading to a collapse of modern society, a new world order and an uncertain future for humanity. As the human race struggles to recover, the re-developed nations focus their resources on deep space travel to chart a new beginning for mankind.
As part of an expedition sent to find a home beyond Earth, you will write the next chapter for humanity as you lead your people into a new frontier and create a new civilization in space. Explore and colonize an alien planet, research new technologies, amass mighty armies, build incredible Wonders and shape the face of your new world. As you embark on your journey you must make critical decisions. From your choice of sponsor and the make-up of your colony, to the ultimate path you choose for your civilization, every decision opens up new possibilities.
