Cinemagram – Create Amazing Animated Photos Using Your iPhone

Last year I wrote about an amazing collection of cinemagraphs by Jamie Beck And Kevin Burg. The shots looked fantastic, and I was dissapointed when I didn’t see more using the same technique. That all changed when someone pointed me in the direction of an iPhone app called Cinemagram. Though these guys call them cinemagrams instead of cinemagraphs, the idea is the same; to create often eerie looking “photos” with subtle hints of movement.

Cinemagram is a simple to use application that allows users to record and animate small portions of an image to create beautiful, and sometimes disturbing, photo/video hybrids. Yes, they’re basically just animated GIF images, but as you’ll see below, they look fantastic. Users seem to highlight a maximum of two animation selections in any given shot, and I think that’s why I find them so interesting. A person won’t necessarily notice the subtle animations at first glance, giving these shots an almost cheeky quality to them.

This is another example of the subtle, and exceptionally creepy type of photos you can take using this iPhone application. Some of the shots a person could create would be the stuff of nightmares. Imagine a completely stationary dog, but with bees occasionally pouring forth from its mouth to attack anyone nearby. That would be absolutely dreadful, and would no doubt be trivial to create using this app.

You’ll find more cinemagraphs on their official featured gallery, and you can download the app itself from the App Store. If you create any terrifying or even beautiful animated photos, don’t hesitate to contact us and share them.
