Gadgets & Gear

It took most of us here a while to really dig into the world of hand-held gadgets, such as cell phones and gps units, but now that we have, we’re hooked. I finally understand why so many people gush over these crafty devices, and you’ll find many articles outlining our experiences with the newest toys on the market, as well as hacks and tricks to improve them.

Word Lens is a real-time translation program which uses the camera on your phone, and translates the text it sees from one language to another. Not only does it translate the text, it actually “edits” the original text into the destination language, all in real-time. You really need to see it to believe it.

Now, I’m one of the few people stuck in the dumb phone era. I’ve had the same internet-lacking relic of a bygone era for years now, and though I spend a not-insubstantial amount of time researching new phones, I still haven’t pulled the trigger. There’s always been a certain lack of features with the latest generation of phones that makes me think twice before dropping hundreds of my hard-earned dollars on one. Recently though, I’ve seen a slew of new software which is introducing what can only be described as augmented reality. Word Lens is one such piece of software, and I think this will finally be enough to shake my apathy and get my ass into the nearest cellular dealer.

Lance-Armstrong-Exercise-CycleAre you one of those people that intend to workout but can’t get the motivation?  The Livestrong Limited Edition Indoor Cycle is for you because every time you get on it, you’ll be pushed by an imaginary Lance Armstrong, to do your best.  After all, he is the guy that beat cancer and beat a hell of a lot of cyclists at Tour de France.

The Livestrong Limited Edition Indoor Cycle is a premium exercise bike that will see production of only 500 units and if you’re one of the first 150 buyers, you get an autographed picture of Lance Armstrong.  The bike features the standard black and yellow Livestrong colors and has a 3” x 2” wireless display that show you RPM’s, heart rate, calories burned, distance, and time.  The bike’s handlebars are modeled after road-racing bicycles and the frame is made out of heavy-duty steel, it features a multi-ribbon drive belt system and has a 40 pound flywheel. continue reading →

Tron-LegacyUp until recently I had never heard of Tron or what it was about; I still don’t know what the movie is about, but at least I’ve heard of it now and made a post (here).  I was thinking of watching the movie, but after my last post, I know it will be a let-down.

I have compiled a list of some cool and not so cool Tron Legacy inspired merchandise.

The Light Cycle

Just like the Light Cycle from the movie, you too can ride in style on this street-legal version of the motorcycle for only $55,000.  Built by Parker Brothers Choppers, the Light Cycle replica is based on a Suzuki TLR1000 and makes use of plenty of fiberglass and steel to get the desired look.  The Light Cycle weighs 474 pounds and measures over 100 inches in length by 23 inches in width. continue reading →

A Standard USB Flash Drive With Blue Trim

I like to think of myself as a technology enthusiast. I follow the latest tech trends posted on sites like wired, I buy the latest video cards to run games I’ll never actually get around to playing, and I research the newest Android builds so that I’m well versed in cell phones that I’ll never actually buy. That’s why I find it so humorous that I’ve never owned and made use of a magical little device called a usb flash drive.

I recently  decided that instead of using Dropbox to store and sync my files – a messy business in and of itself – that I would instead start hauling them around on a usb thumb drive. This allows me to keep important business documents away from the prying eyes of the various covert agencies trying to acquire them, and well, it’s just a lot more convenient than having to install Dropbox on every computer I want to use to use my files. continue reading →

Daniel-Weil-Clock-For-An-Architect

Daniel Weil is best known for dismantling and the reassembling of transistor radios back in the 1980’s.  I’d be lying if I said I knew who he was or what he did prior to today.  Daniel created a one-off clock as a gift for an architect dubbed the “Clock For An Architect”.

In typical modern architecture fashion, the clock is very minimalist and exposes all the components, making for a stunning visual piece that will be stared at for more than just finding out what time it is.  The “Architect Clock” can be called a work of art, at least in my eyes; I’ve never seen a clock so elegant and masculine at the same time. continue reading →

Home-Made-Racing-Simulator

With the recent release of Gran Turismo 5 racing game, I have been spending a lot of time in front of the PS3 and my TV, racing exotic cars on tracks around the world.  I’ve also been thinking of making the driving experience more realistic and have been thinking of making a home-made racing simulator because I don’t feel like spending $3,000 on the VisionRacer VR3.

My search (and yours too) is over thanks to Lyshco, a member at the overclockers forum, who came up with an ingenious way to make a racing rig at an affordable price (maybe free if you have some of the things needed) and it isn’t going to take away valuable apartment space. continue reading →

Doettling-Colosimo-Safe

Last week we brought The Skeleton watch safe by luxury safe makers Dottling.  The Skeleton watch safe was a bit on the expensive side (€250,000) and was a one-off piece, so we decided to bring you a more affordable watch safe called the Colosimo.  It only holds one watch and is very affordable compared to The Skeleton, priced at only $23,800!

Okay, it’s not cheap and most of us will never spend this kind of money on a watch, let alone on a watch safe/winder, it is cool looking though and it doesn’t cost anything to talk about it.  The Dottling Colosimo is named after the famous Chicago gangster and bank robber “Big Jim” Colosimo, before Al Capone’s time.  The watch safe is designed to look like a bank safe from that era, which used to have huge thick round doors.  I’m sure you’ve seen these types of bank safes in old-school gangster movies. continue reading →

Ferrari-Prancing-Horse-StatueNot all of us can afford Ferrari cars, so what’s the next best thing?  How about a statue of the world famous Ferrari Prancing Horse?  Of course not life-sized statue, that would be pretty cool but most likely just as expensive as Ferrari cars.

The Ferrari Store has just released a limited edition sculpture of the prancing horse for Ferrari fan-boys; I’d be the first to admit I’m one of those so-called fan-boys.  The limited edition prancing horse sculpture is made entirely out of silver and weighs 850 grams and is 7.9” (20 cm) tall. continue reading →

If you’re like me then you curse yourself on a daily basis for jumping the gun and buying an iPad case early. The sundry mix of cases available for purchase now are enough to make your head spin. Then there’s the Wallee. This magnificent addition to any apple enthusiast’s roster is sure to become a staple in day to day activities. Essentially, the Wallee is composed of two components, an adhesive disk and a hard case. Your iPad is mounted on the wall inside the hard case and voila! continue reading →

Gerber's Bear Grylls Surival Knife Stuck In A TreeEver since I was a child, I’ve been interested in knives and anything even vaguely hunting or military related. I don’t know why exactly; I’ve never needed to hunt for my food (I have a supermarket for that), and outside of computer games, I’ve never had to defend myself using a knife. So why bother owning a survival knife? Well, if nothing else, I think there’s something manly and primal about owning a blade; especially one called The Ultimate Knife. If we face an apocalypse, at least I can take comfort in owning a knife that not only has a sharp edge, but also an obnoxiously loud whistle to annoy my attackers into submission.

The Ultimate Knife, made as a collaborative piece between Gerber and Bear Grylls, is a no frills survival knife that sports a sharp high carbon stainless steel blade, Ferrocerium rod fire starter, and (as previously mentioned) an obnoxiously loud “emergency whistle”, which I’ve personally tested out during a game of beer pong to great effect. continue reading →
