Bryan Saunders – Self-Portraits, The Highest Form of Art

People take creative and artistic inspiration from all sorts of places. Some people go for walks, others take long, relaxing showers, and then there are people like Bryan Lewis Saunders who get right down to business and do drugs… lots and lots of drugs.

Bryan has been creating self-portraits for many years now; in fact, he does a new one each and every day. Somewhere along the line something changed, though, and he decided to start taking drugs before painting or drawing some of them. What happened was, well… probably just what you expect. Some of his work looks absolutely brilliant, and others – like the image below – well… not so much.

Bryan Lewis Saunders – Self Portraits While High

Okay, so this first one is up for debate. He didn’t take a drug per se, but instead a type of alcohol; absinthe to be exact, and not the “fake crap”. I’ve never had real absinthe before, but I’m starting to form a pretty solid opinion of what it does.

I don’t think I really need to explain what he took before drawing this particular self-portrait. He took oregano, for those of you would haven’t figured it out.

This rather ferret  like interpreation of himself was drawn while on Loritab. I have no idea what it is or what it does, but it certainly hasn’t hindered his artistic ability. This is where his skill really starts to show through.

Then we have this, where it seems his creativity and even motor skills have… run out of gas, so to speak. Don’t worry, he’ll get back on track eventually.

This is… I don’t even know what to say. He’s either laying down in a bed, or he’s a ghost (notice the fading arms) whose preparing to jump off of a building. One of the two… or perhaps even both.

Remember those people who took bath salts and ate people’s faces off? Yeah, that’s what he took when he drew this picture above. The zombie faced styling of himself is rather appropriate in this case.

This is by far my favorite, and I hope you can appreciate why. I absolutely love bad jokes and puns. Also, it’s a snake… with a face! Reminds me of what my character looked like in Mass Effect 3 after importing him from ME2. Yikes.

I decided to finish off with this little gem; the product of mushrooms, and the source of what will undoubtedly be many months of nightmare filled slumber. His piercing eyes will forever haunt my dreams.

More Bryan Saunders

If you aren’t in a state of complete shock and confusion, you may remember me mentioning that Bryan does self-portraits ever single day. Well, not only does he create self-portraits, but he’s also done hundreds of other types of art. He’s amassed quite a collection on his website, and I encourage you to have a look. When Bryan isn’t snorting lines of mysterious substances, he’s actually a very talented artist – even with the brain damage. I would explain, but it’s best you browse around his website and read the full explanation from the man himself.
