BMW CS Vintage Concept by David Obendorfer

Ford brought back the look of the vintage Mustang in 2005 and soon after, Chevy and Dodge followed in its footpath with the Camaro and Challenger. And most recently, Nissan showcased their IDx Nismo concept which is reminiscent of the Datsun days of the late 1960’s and early 70’s. Wouldn’t it be pretty cool if BMW brought back one of their early cars and modernized it?

It sure would be but unfortunately there are no plans for anything of that sort. That didn’t stop David Obendorfer from doing his own project and working on a modern interpretation of the 1968 BMW E9 and 2000 CS dubbed BMW CS Vintage Concept. I like that the design doesn’t look like a current vehicle in BMW’s lineup yet it still maintains the iconic lines and flow that makes it a modern day BMW. David Obendorfer has tried to keep the design realistic, and for that reason has based the concept on the chassis of the current BMW 6-Series.

I’m no designer but in my opinion the concept does an amazing job at fusing both of designs from the 1960s, while still implementing technology and design elements of modern day. The results are perfect for today’s drivers and I could imagine the media frenzy over this vehicle would this have been released by BMW as a concept at the Geneva motor show and not by a third-party designer.

Old cars have their own beauty which a lot of modern day vehicles lack but mixing the old with the new is a nice compromise and could potentially be a new trend in the automotive world. Only problem with mixing designs of two different eras is that the vehicle can become dated very fast and become irrelevant in the design world.

What do you guys think of this BMW CS Vintage Concept? If you like this vehicle, check out David Obendorfer’s website for other vintage concepts such as the Renault 4 and Fiat 127.
