BMW 3.0 CSL Hommage Concept

Have you noticed most new BMW cars look the same and have pretty confusing names and are in weird categories, like 4-door coupes, 4-door SUV coupes, and 2-door sedans. Okay, I made most of that up, but they have some ridiculous nomenclature, saying the all their even numbered cars are coupes but then introducing sedan versions of the coupes, which were initially based on sedans… Coming back to all their cars looking the same, this is a popular trend amongst the European automakers lately, and I’m getting pretty sick of it.

However, if BMW were to build the 3.0 CSL Hommage Concept, we won’t have that problem. Car fans probably remember the original 1970 BMW 3.0 CSL, a lightweight coupe. This new car takes design inspirations from the original and is an homage to that car. CSL stands for Coupe Sport Leichtbaun or Coupe Sport Lightweight in English, or in other words, lightweight sport coupe. The CSL Hommage Concept was showcased at the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este.

The new BMW 3.0 CSL Hommage Concept brings the 1970’s design into 21st century. The car uses lightweight Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastic (CFRP) in most of the panels instead of aluminum, which was used on the original CSL. BMW didn’t say what displacement engine is powering the car, we’re guessing something around 3 liter, but we do know it is a hybrid unit. The car looks pretty good from most angles and you can definitely see where its design inspirations come from.

So, will BMW build this car and get away from the same old boring formula they’ve been using for the last 10 – 15 years? One can only hope! They could build it, in a more streamlined production form, starting with the underpinnings of the new BMW M4 and they should have a pretty hot seller.
