The Best Sports Events to Attend in 2017

Football and tennis kick things off during January, with the African Cup of Nations and the Australian Open taking centre stage.

Senegal, Ivory Coast and Ghana are amongst the favourites for Africa’s fourth edition of their football championships which will be held in Gabon.

Novak Djokovic is back in Melbourne to defend the men’s singles title, although he’s likely to face a big challenge from British stars Andy Murray.

The tournament offers a range of betting opportunities for sports and online fantasy sports fans alike, with little to choose between Djokovic and Murray at the head of the market.

February sees the 51st NFL Super Bowl take place in Houston, Texas, with the New England Patriots strongly fancied to secure their fifth championship.

Rugby union’s Six Nations tournament gets underway during February, while the Bobsleigh and Skeleton World Championships take place in Germany.

March begins with the European Indoor Athletics Championships in Serbia, before football steals the spotlight as the Champions League returns with the last 16 games.

Horse racing’s prestigious Cheltenham festival is also scheduled during a month which features the return of Formula 1 with the season opening Australian Grand Prix on March 26.

Attention switches to golf at the start of April, with the Masters at Augusta set to feature some of the sport’s top names including Rory McIlroy, Jason Day and Jordan Spieth.

The month ends with British boxing star Anthony Joshua facing Wladimir Klitschko in a heavyweight world title fight at Wembley Stadium.

Ice hockey’s IIHF World Championships take place in Germany and France during May, while the historic FA Cup final at the end of the month remains a mouth-watering date in the English sporting calendar.

The UEFA Champions League final in Cardiff, golf’s US Open in Wisconsin and the 85th 24 Hours of Le Mans race in France are amongst the highlights of a busy June which also sees football’s Confederations Cup kick-off in Russia.

Cycling’s Tour de FrancE and Wimbledon tennis dominate proceedings during July, although the British Open golf tournament at Royal Birkdale also promises to be an exciting event.

The IAAF World Athletics Championships will be hosted at the Olympic Stadium in London during August, but arguably the highlight of the month will be the start of the US Open tennis in New York.

The following month begins with a host of qualifying games for the 2018 World Cup, but the undoubted centrepiece of September is the Italian Grand Prix at the historic Monza circuit.

Wembley hosts another major event on October 1, with the NFL returning to London once again.

F1 also has a busy few weeks, paying visits to Japan, the USA and Mexico, while there’s also motorsport of a different kind with Wales Rally GB scheduled for October 27-30.

The exciting ATP World Tour Finals rounds off a busy tennis season during November and F1 also draws to a close with the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix at the end of the month.

The latest Ashes Test cricket series between Australia and England starts in Brisbane in November, with further Tests scheduled during for December to cap what should be a spectacular year of sport.
